Brake Noise or Vibration: Possible Causes

Understand why squealing, grinding, pulling and pedal vibration need a braking-system inspection.

This guide is general information. Stop driving and seek appropriate assistance if the vehicle is unsafe, seriously overheating, losing braking or steering control, or showing another urgent warning.

Different noises suggest different checks

A brief squeal can relate to pad material or surface conditions, but repeated grinding may indicate that friction material is badly worn. Knocking can involve loose or worn components. Sound alone is not enough to confirm which part needs replacement.

Vibration and pulling

A pulsing pedal, steering vibration or pulling under braking can involve discs, calipers, tyres, suspension or alignment. The conditions in which it occurs—light braking, heavy braking or a particular speed—are useful diagnostic details.

  • Note whether the steering wheel or pedal vibrates
  • Check whether the vehicle pulls consistently
  • Do not ignore a soft or sinking pedal
  • Arrange urgent help if braking response is reduced

Why surrounding components are checked

Replacing pads without checking discs, caliper movement, hoses and visible fluid leaks can leave the original problem unresolved. Braking work should consider the condition and operation of the system around the worn part.

What to tell the garage

Describe the noise, when it occurs, whether warning lights are present and whether braking feel has changed. If the car does not feel safe, do not drive it to an appointment without appropriate advice.
